Parents often ask…
What’s the biggest secret of worry-free baby development?
What’s the quickest way to know my baby’s development is OK. And at what stage should I take further action if I suspect my baby’s falling behind?
Experience all over the world confirms that most baby development problems can easily be corrected if treated immediately.
So, the #1 secret is…
Spotting a potential problem as soon as possible. And then immediately taking action to correct it.
The difficult part is often to know what to look for.
First realize that normal baby development is universal and follows the same natural pattern throughout the world. That means a baby developing normally should master every milestone within normal ranges regardless of surroundings or where s/he lives.
Secondly… babies may sometimes be slow developers. But there’s one more thing: there is a big difference between being late reaching a milestone and not doing it at all.
Here we’re looking at being slow to reach a milestone.
The best practical rule of thumb is
When there’s one development milestone that your child doesn’t master on time it’s not necessarily a problem.
The answer lies in looking at *all* aspects of your baby’s development to get a better answer.
Let me explain: look at what your baby does, AND also at how she does it.
If your baby is very late in reaching one milestone, it isn’t necessarily reason for concern. Your baby may only be a slower developer.
But if at the same time she also experiences other development problems, then you need to be alert.
I then suggest that you closely watch the rest of your child’s development.
These may be things such as…
Poor sleeping patterns; Poor eating patterns; Almost always crying; Being constantly irritated; Difficult to soothe; Your baby makes few or no noises, or… Doesn’t show any interest in toys.
Now if you see one or more of these signs at the same time when s/he’s struggling to master a specific milestone, you have several things happening at the same time.
And combined these signs may be telling you that your child may not only be a slow developer. In fact, your baby may have a development problem or two that needs further attention.
Stated differently… you should not look at only one milestone in isolation. Take the rest of your baby’s day-to-day behaviors and actions also into consideration.
Try to find out and judge your baby’s overall functioning. Are things working in unison? Or do you see obvious signs that everything is not necessarily in order?
If you suspect that your child may be having some development problems, take action immediately. Don’t postpone follow-up action. And don’t try to solve the problem yourself.
Consult a specialist as soon as possible.
Monitoring and judging your baby’s overall performance is surely the very best indication and confirmation that your baby is developing normally. And best of all… it’s also the shortest route to recovery.

Does this sound familiar? The sun is shining as morning welcomes a new day. You get up, get dressed and start to work on the seemingly endless chores youve been putting off. You feel good because you and your spouse decided together that this would be the weekend to tackle everything from the broken washer to the overgrown hydrangeas. But then you look over and see your husband, who was supposed to be washing the car, sprawled in front of the television with a bag of chips or worse, you find him snoring peacefully in his recliner. What do you do?
Okay - maybe your husband doesnt even own a recliner. Maybe he does help when you ask him, sometimes. But maybe, just maybe, youd like him to do more. Perhaps youve even created the dreaded honey-do list more times than you can count and waited as nothing got crossed off. If so, youll want to keep reading.
You might be surprised to know that men are helping around the house more than ever. They now share tasks that women once completed alone. Perhaps it is the influx of women in the workplace that has brought about this change. Perhaps its just good common sense.
In a recent survey, couples were asked various questions regarding their involvement in household chores. Nearly 90% of women felt that their mates helped them around the house. All of the women stated that they appreciated the help they received, though all but ten percent would like to see their husbands help out more. In contrast, 75% of the men interviewed felt that they were responsible for half of the household chores. Most stated that they didnt resist helping out, but wanted to feel more appreciated for the help they offered.
In the same survey, men were asked which chore they liked the most and which they disliked. Answers were all over the board. Those with pets disliked picking up after the pet. Some disliked laundry, while others stated laundry was their favorite chore. For men who have yards, yard work was by far the number one chore they preferred. So why then is it often such a struggle to get things done? Here are some suggestions to get the honey-do list completed before a household war erupts:
*Ask nicely. You may think youre already doing this but more often than naught, the men I interviewed thought their wives could approach them more openly rather than demanding their help. I know, I know, this is difficult, especially if you feel like youve already asked a zillion times! But give it a try - it might pay off.
*Show appreciation and be satisfied with the job done. This goes both ways. Men need to appreciate the work their wives do on a daily basis. When they do, women can more easily appreciate the work their husbands do as well. No, your husband isnt going to fold the towels the same way you do, and he may indeed use the window cleaner on the counters, but realize that things dont always have to be done your way. Look at it this way; if he does it, you dont have to!
*Communicate with one another. If you remember nothing else from this article, remember this. Effective communication is the answer here. The truth is, you both want a home that is livable and enjoyable. But you dont want chores to be the straw that breaks the camels back in your marriage. If hed rather give the kids a bath than clean up dinner, let him. If youd rather pick the weeds than do the laundry, tell him. Compromise.
The key is talking about what is important to both of you and finding a way to meet both of your needs. An approach that works for one person may not work for another. Be specific about your needs, consider dividing the chores in a way that makes both of you happy and stick to it! When you work together, you give yourselves more time to play together, and we could all use more of that! And men, remember, as Dr. Phil McGraw says, When Mama aint happy, aint nobody happy. So stop using the honey-do list as a coaster and consider tackling it I have a sneaking suspicion youll be glad you did.

If your child is a Spongebob fan (and who isnt?) you will be surprised at the wealth of ideas, crafts, games, party favors, and party packages available online, in party supply stores, and department stores. You can even download free Spongebob music online, and burn cds to play at the party, and even include in the goodie bags as party favors!
Spongebob and his bubbly bunch can be found online. You can find a photo you like, and using your photo editing program, create party invitations featuring your child lounging on a beach with Spongebob. All you have to do is find a photo of Spongebob, or whichever of his friends your child loves the most, take a picture of your child, and create a photo that looks as if they were side by side when the photo was taken. Make copies of this photo, including the time and date of the party, directions to your house, and be sure to specify a time the guests should be picked up after the party. It is always a good idea to invite a couple of other parents you know, so they can lend a hand, and the party is on!
Spongebob Squarepants Decorations
If you are able to hold this party outdoors, the decorations are very easy. Most anyone can buy Spongebob, Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Gary, Squidward Tentacles, Mr. Krabs, Jellyfish, Plankton, and Bikini Bottom posters, which can be glued to cardboard (ask the local appliance store for big boxes) and you can even make cutouts, if you want. Use a very sturdy glue, such as F-26, to affix wooden spikes, and put them into the ground throughout the party area. Put kiddie pools out, and even if it is too cool to swim, you can fill the pools with sand and pails and shovels. Stake out a few sheets of clear plastic, onto which you can paint Spongebob and his friends, or affix stickers, to provide clean areas for crafts and eating. Make jellyfish from pink balloons, by blowing up a balloon, and gluing or taping long, uninflated balloons to create tentacles. String up lots of sea blue and green crepe paper streamers to blow in the wind.
Spongebob Squarepants Party Games
Have a black bag of chocolate coins, and give each guest a ziplock bag. Everyone gets a coin at the end of each game, and a warning to guard it, because Mr. Krabs might be waiting to scoop them up!
Who Am I? is a great game! Have pictures of Spongebob and all his friends ready. Call each guest, one at a time. Tape a Spongebob character printout on their back, allowing the other guests to see. The person with the photo on their back can ask yes and no questions, such as, Am I yellow? Am I a Snail? etc., until he can guess which character is on his back.
The Jellyfish Stomp is another fun game! Before inflating some of your jellyfish balloons, put small pieces of paper inside with the name of a party favor on it (like Stickers sour straws…) and when the music stops, the dancer stomps a balloon, and wins the gift inside.
Before singing happy birthday, play the Spongebob theme song (Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!!) Then sing happy birthday, and serve cake, ice cream and seawater punch.
Seawater Punch
Blue Raspberry soft drink mix (mixed according to package directions)
1 bottle lemon lime soda
1 pint of vanilla ice cream
1 can pineapple juice
Be sure to have lots of washable markers in each childs goodie bag, and allow them to color some printed and copied coloring pages, while, one at a time, each child is allowed to have his photo taken with his favorite cardboard character, and allow them to take the photo home with them when they leave.
